Apple Upside-Down Cake

Ingredients
  

Topping:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 apples peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

Cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and parchment-line a 9" round cake pan.
  • Make topping: Melt butter and brown sugar in a pan. Pour into cake pan. Arrange apple slices on top.
  • Mix dry ingredients: Whisk flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Cream butter & sugar: In a separate bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla.
  • Combine: Alternate adding dry ingredients and milk to wet ingredients, mixing gently.
  • Assemble: Pour batter over apples and smooth the top.
  • Bake: 40–45 minutes, until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool & flip: Let cool 10 minutes, then invert onto plate. Peel off parchment gently.

Notes

  • Best served slightly warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
  • Use Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala apples for best flavor.
